Over 100 cancer patients who were stranded at the Mulago facility following the national lockdown that hit the transport sector have finally been sent home.

Some of the patients hail from as far as Mbale, Gulu, Kumi, Kabale , Pader while others come from as near as Kireka in Kampala but were all stuck at the hospital even after finishing their full treatment.

They were bid farewell on Tuesday 21st April after the Mulago management provided 4 buses to transport them to their various destinations.

The Executive Director UCI Jackson Orem says they want to ensure that all cancer patients under treatment continue getting uninterrupted medication as advised by their doctors.

Dr. Orem says they have an improvised plan that will see patients across the country continue with the relevant treatment despite the COVID 19 lockdown.

He also notes the first batch of patients will set off today and the others will follow.

As of  2019, the new number of recorded cancer patients in Uganda was standing at over 33,617
