Justice Jane Frances Abodo has promised to review the case back log in the judicial system by recruiting at least more 60 prosecutors to cover all courts and Magisterial areas.
Justice Abodo said this while officially assuming the office of Directorate of Public Prosecutions -DPP on Wednesday, April 22.
Justice Abodo who received instruments of power from her Deputy Charles Elem has replaced Justice Mike Chibita who was recently elevated to Justice of Supreme Court.
Justice Abodo indicated that there has been a challenge of limited staffing but her focus will be placed in serving the public interest.
pledged to clean the image of the Office of the Directorate of Public Prosecutions by streamlining the case handling system, fighting corruption and taking services to rural areas.
“I would like us to review our current deployments in light of the existing backlog. Where is this backlog? Which Region, which courts, what type of offenses? , Next Financial year, I propose that we mobilize resources to recruit at least 60 prosecutors in order to cover all courts and magisterial areas,” she said.
Justice Abodo also expressed pleasure with her predecessors who in place Specialized Units such as Anti-Corruption, Land Fraud, Gender, Children and Sexual Offences, International Cooperation, International Crimes, Asset Recovery, etc.
Abodo said she will work with these Regional Offices and 13 Departments with the existing staff will deal with sophisticated crime.
“The people and the need to reduce case backlog. We shall work with the Judiciary on this issue. I am happy that my predecessors put in place Specialized Units such as Anti-Corruption, Land Fraud, Gender, Children and Sexual Offences, International Cooperation, International Crimes, Asset Recovery, etc.” she said.
With the emergence of cyber-crime, Justice Abodo also pledged to crack down on cybercrime by training prosecutors to deal with offenses ranging from illegal cyber payments, illegal electronic transfer or acquisition of funds, terrorist financing, money laundering among others.
