Uganda police have released its annual crime report analysis showing Kampala to be the most dangerous place to stay in Uganda because of the high rates of crime registered in the 2019 crime report.
The director Criminal Investigations, Grace Akullo, who presented the Crime records for 2019 says Katwe a city suburb recorded the most incidents of crime in the region.
Katwe police post alone registered 4,559 with 1,189 thefts,51 murders which were the highest number of crimes recorded by a single police station.
These thefts mean that three people lose property to thugs every day while four people being murdered per month in the area.
Katwe’s crime rate is bigger than the total number of cases recorded in five districts in the Busoga sub-region.
Other areas that recorded crime in Kampala are Old Kampala, Kabalagala, Kawempe, and Kasangati which recorded more than 2,000 crimes.
Old Kampala registered 3,157 cases which included 889 thefts, 428 cases of child violence, 100 robberies, and 28 murders.
Still, in Old Kampala, two people lose property to thugs every day while nearly two children fall victim to defilement, assault, and negligence each day that passes.
Most cases in Old Kampala are recorded in places such as Kasubi, Lubya, Lusaze, Masanafu and Mengo.
In Kawempe, Kajjansi, Kasangati, and Kabalagala more than 2,000 crimes were recorded making it an increment of more than 20 percent crime compared to statistics of 2018.
Kampala Metropolitan police commander Commissioner Moses Kafeero commenting shortly after the report release attributed Kasangati’s fast-rising crime rate to scattered homesteads.
Kafeero said because of big distances between homes, sometimes people make alarms when attacked by criminals but they are not heard by their neighbors.
To curb the crime in Kasangati, police have since resolved to shoot suspected criminals.
CID boss Grace Akullo believes crime rates for this will be much lower because of increased joint security operations and installed Closed Circuit Television –CCTV cameras.
Kampala metropolitan has more than 3321 spy cameras installed in all towns, trading centers, highways, and access roads.
