A liquor wasted local Defence Unit-LDU in Moroto district shocked his colleagues when he pointed a gun to his direction and committed suicide.
Paul Oyee Lochap, attached to Lakale detachment, reportedly went on a drinking spree to a local bar at the trading center where he misplaced 60 rounds of ammunition.
A colleague who declined to identify himself says Lochap was told to clarify circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the ammunition and ordered to locate them.
A frustrated Lochap decided to fire live bullets in the air before turning the gun on himself, killing himself on spot.
Major Peter Mugisa, the UPDF 3rd Division Spokesperson, says Lochap was under the influence of alcohol when he ended his life.
He has also rubbished claims that Lochap was shot by his colleagues when he opened fire.
The news of Lochap’s death hasn’t gone down well with his family, which has since rejected the body citing foul play.
The deceased’s uncle, Logiel Lomeri, has called for investigations into the case before they accept his body for burial. “It’s difficult to imagine what happened, we need an investigation,” said Lomeri.
At the time of filing this report, Lochap’s body was still at the Brigade headquarters pending further discussions between the family and the UPDF leadership.
