Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) has on Friday 29th May 2020 commenced the process of allocating designated stages and routes for taxi operators in preparation for the return of public transport.
President Museveni on May 19th, 2020 declared that public transport would resume on June 4th provided free facemasks have been made available to all persons aged 6years and above, and Standard Operating Procedures-SOPs are put in place.
On Thursday the Kampala and Metropolitan Affairs Minister Betty Amongi tasked taxi drivers to visit KCCA today to obtain SOPs on the number of passengers to be carried and measures relating to protective equipment for operating passenger vehicles.
Amongi said that all taxi drivers who reported today would be assigned stipulated stages and routes where they will do business.
She says after registering with KCCA, the operators will be required to proceed to the ministry of transport for a temporary route chart that will only be valid for 6 months until 31st December 2020.
The six months grace period is to allow public transport operators to obtain a permanent route chart, color code GKMA, and other user fees.
The minister indicated that effective 1st January 2021, all vehicles that will not have complied shall not be allowed to operate within greater Kampala.
For bus operators, they will deal directly with the ministry of works and transport for guidance.
Meanwhile, Boda Bodas will also be subjected to SOPs and gazetted stages and Boda Boda free zones in the city which will be communicated later once the 21 days of carrying cargo are finalized.
