The Ministry of health has declined a request by the Uganda Medical Association is asking for compensation from the government on behalf of  27 health workers that contracted the contagious pandemic of COVID-19 in the line of duty.

The medical body had recently written to the permanent secretaries in the Ministry of Health and that of Public Service asking them to offer welfare to the infected health workers.

The health workers, who tested positive for COVID-19 were handling patients at the health facilities of  Lira and Mulago among other, before the Ministry of health carried out it’s mandatory testing of frontline health workers.

Dr. Richard Idro the President of the association says none of the frontline health workers has recovered yet but are still undergoing treatment at the Entebbe General Hospital where they are admitted.

However, the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry Dr. Diana Atwiine says there’s no way they can be compensated.

She however said that the government will continue paying their monthly salary, in addition, to offering support to their families until they recover.
