A Boda Boda motorcyclist this morning shocked traffic police and locals when lit himself up to ashes using petrol in the Masaka police office on Thursday morning.

Hussein Walugembe a resident of Masaka barracks, had gone to the police station to retrieve his motorcycle that was impounded on Wednesday evening for breach of curfew guidelines.

Walugembe was operating at Buddu Shell Fuel Pump Station.

Enock Ambaine, the Southern Region Police Commander, says a traffic officer issued a receipt to Walugembe that he couldn’t afford pay for leading him to instead purchase petrol, setting himself ablaze.

Ambaine adds that he has instructed the Professional Standards Unit to open a general inquiry file to investigate the professionalism of the traffic police in the matter.

However, a friend to the deceased revealed that police had asked him for Shillings 100,000 to release his motorcycle which he couldn’t raise.

Ambaine has promised to investigate the allegations of police asking for Shillings 100,000 from the deceased because the receipts given to cyclists operating during curfew hours are only Shillings 40,000.

The deceased’s body has been taken to Masaka Regional Referral hospital mortuary for postmortem.
