Speaker Rebecca Kadaga has issued Kampala Minister directive to return to Parliament with concrete position on the arcades continued closure.

MPs Thursday afternoon during Plenary urged government to allow arcades to operate as they are easier places to standard operating procedures for prevention of the spread of #Covid19.

Kasese Municipality MP, Robert Centenary led the house to request government rethink the arcades as a measure of taming the deadly Covid-19 in the city.

Centenary told Plenary that the influx of people in downtown Kampala is against the procedures put in place.

He narrated: “I happened to visit specifically down town, kikuubo areas. And I would like to inform you the influx of people on the streets and outside the arcades, is actually promoting social networking.”

The Kasese Municipality MP added: “And is falling short of the directives the President gave inorder not to spread Covid-19.”

He revealed: “My observation madam speaker is that it is easier to manage those people inside the arcades than and provide preventive guidelines; handwashing facilities, sanitizing and checking their temperatures than leaving them in the streets squeezing one another.”

Centenary warned: “There is a much bigger problem than letting people in the streets.”

Abdu Latiff Ssebaggala, Kawempe North, Kampala added his voice: “In Owino Market (Balikudembe Market), it is the same story. Those who are selling foodstuffs, are allowed to operate.

Ssebaggala castigated: “But those who were selling garments and shoes, they are living a very miserable life.”

Speaker Rebecca Kadaga tasked government: “We ask the minister for Kampala to pass this message on to the Kampala Covid-19 taskforce. And the minister should give answer by next week on Wednesday.”

President Yoweri Museveni in his last speech a fortnight ago revealed that he had constituted a group of people to assess the arcades and would return to give a way forward.
