Residents in Nakasongola district are mourning the death of a fisherman who was swallowed by a hungry crocodile on the shores of Lake Kyoga.

The deceased has been identified as Abbas Zziwa, a fisherman at Kibuye Landing Site in Lwampanga sub-county in Nakasongola district.

Zziwa met his ill fate on Thursday night after he sneaked into the Lake Kyoga to lay fish traps along the shorelines and was eaten alive by an alert crocodile.

Other fishermen on-site who witnessed the scene say they heard Zziwa scream out loud for help and rushed to his rescue only to find the crocodile had already disappeared into deeper waters.

Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson Isah Ssemwogerere could not comment on the incident saying he was waiting for a brief from area Police officers.

At least eight fishermen have drowned in Nakasongola in recent months after sneaking into the Lake in defiance of an earlier ban imposed by the Fisheries Protection Unit and the Ministry of fisheries.
