Locals in Bugulumbya sub-county, Kamuli district are grieving the sudden death of a teacher in their community who reportedly decided to call time on his life after poverty and starvation hit him hard.
Jimmy Buyonga, 32, a teacher at Kasambira Preparatory Primary School in Bugulumbya sub-county reportedly strangled himself to death after he failed to afford food and had accumulated debts from money lenders, local grocery shops and rent.
The locals claim Buyonga had acquired loans from numerous money lenders in anticipation that schools would open soon.
The residents who discovered Buyonga’s lifeless body on Thursday were shocked that he even chose to end his own life in the P.7 classroom he taught by hanging.
Michael Kasadha, the Busoga North police spokesperson says that the body has been taken to Kamuli General hospital for post-mortem.
On Wednesday this week another 58-year-old Primary school teacher was discovered hanging on a coffee tree, Dansan Twesime, a senior teacher at Nyamiti Primary school, in Muhorro Town Council is said to have ended his own life under unclear circumstances.
Parliament on Wednesday tasked the government to explain why private teachers under Lockdown have not received their SACCO funds which were promised by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni.
In his last national address on COVID-19, President Museveni promised to inject 2 billion Uganda shillings into the Private Teacher’s Savings and Credit Cooperative Society-SACCO and also directed the Finance Ministry preferably through the Microfinance Support Centre to allocate Shillings 20 billion Uganda shillings to the same SACCO to allow teachers to access loans.
