Police have arrested 2 suspects in connection to a dramatic teargas furnished incident involving Mayoral aspirant Joseph Mayanja aka Chameleone while officially launching his campaign offices today at Balintuma Road in Old Kampala under the National Unity platform (NUP).

The 2 culprits are currently detained at Old Kampala Police Station on charges of disobedience of lawful orders.

Kampala metropolitan police mouthpiece Patrick Onyango says NUP had erected nine tents and mobilized people to attend in large numbers in total disregard of the Electoral commission guidelines on open rallies.

He adds that they had also planned and hired a brass band to lead their procession from Namirembe up to the venue.

Onyango says police tried to engage the organizers to ensure they put in place all the necessary Standard Operating Procedures-SOPs according to the Ministry of Health which they refused to do.

He says they instead went on to organize the function without considering social distancing; the majority had no masks which would result into a breeding ground for the virus.

We talked to them again and they decided to leave the venue but later on, they reorganized and came attacking police.

Onyango however, clarified that Police did not use rubble bullets as alleged by many but instead fired teargas to disperse the crowd.
