The prestigious Buganda Kingdom is today holding her Independence day to commemorate her 58th Independence anniversary.

Buganda got independence ahead of Uganda on October 8, 1962.

The Buganda minister in charge of Bulungi Bwansi and royal visits, Mariam Mayanja Nkalubo, says the event is being held scientifically at the Mengo palace in Kampala.

The ceremony will be attended by not more than 50 guests in compliance with the restrictions on public gatherings as one of the ways of preventing the spread of COVID-19.

The Kabaka of Buganda Ronald Mutebi II who arrives by 11 am will today officiate at the anniversary that started at 10 am.

Buganda was founded in the late 14th century, when the kabaka, or ruler, of the Ganda people, came to exercise strong centralized control over his domains, called Buganda.

By the 19th century, Buganda had become the largest and most powerful kingdom in the region.
