Tortured Gen Katumba Suspects

Uganda prisons services say brutalized suspects arrested involved in the Gen Katumba shootings are undergoing treatment at Kitalya government prison.

5 suspects were last week paraded before the Nakawa chief magistrates court, charged and remanded to Kitalya.

The group is part of a larger one accused of opening fire on the vehicle of the works and transport minister Gen Katumba Wamala, injuring him and killing his daughter Brenda Nantongo and driver Haruna Kayondo.

The suspects are; Muhammad Kagugube, Siriman Kisambira, Abudallah-Aziz Ramadhan Dunku, Kamada Walusimbi and Habib Ramadhan Marjan.

2 others were remanded the previous week.

They were charged with terrorism, murder, and attempted murder before being remanded to Kitalya until August 13, 2021.

They however appeared with visible wounds and cuts to their backs, bottom, legs, and hands.

Their lawyer Geoffrey Turyamusiima asked the court to grant them bail to get medication but that was rejected by the presiding magistrate Dr. Douglas Singiza on grounds that he had no jurisdiction to grant it.

Uganda Prisons spokesperson, Frank Baine says everything is being done according to the law.

“Following the court decision last week to send those suspected remands who are claiming torture to Kitalya for treatment, everything is being done according to the court order,”Baine said.

Baine confirmed says the suspects are being treated and recovering.

“The good news is that they are all stable and well managed. The course of justice will continue to take place.”

Recently the Uganda Law Society and other human rights activists and politicians have condemned the acts of violence and brutality on the suspects.
