Ssegirinya, Ssewanyana Remanded

National Unity Platform legislators Allan Ssewanyana MP Makindye West and Muhammed Ssegirinya – Kawempe North have been remanded to Kitalya govt Prison until the 15th September.

The duo on Tuesday appeared before the Masaka magistrate’s court where they have been slapped charges of 4 counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

Chief Magistrate Charles Yeteise remanded both MPs to Kitalya until mid-September.

Ssewanyana was represented by his lawyer Erias Lukwago while Ssegirnya had Kampala Woman MP Shamim Malende as his counsel.

The prosecution alleges that the duo on the night of August 23rd, 2021 killed 3 people in Masaka.

The deceased has been identified as Michael Nawa, Sulaiman Kakooza, and Tadeo Kiyimba of Kimanya Kabonera.

The prosecution also alleges the 2 legislators plotted meetings to recruit youths to kill on their behalf at Kayanja Rest House and Happy Boys in Kampala.

The duo on Monday appeared at Masaka Police Station to record statements over the gruesome murders and was told to report back today.

Upon their return to Masaka police post, the NUP MP’s were arrested and detained at Masaka Police Statio on murder charges and later produced in court.

Security Minister Maj Gen Jim Muhwezi yesterday said the government had already identified the people behind the gruesome murders.

So far 28 persons have been pronounced dead following attacks by Machete-wielding goons in the greater Masaka area.

Last week, the Masaka magistrates court remanded 10 suspects on 7 counts of murder to Ssaza government prison.
