Kainerugaba still part of armed forces
The Uganda People’s Defence Forces has put to bed rumours surrounding the resignation of First Son and Commander of Land Forces Lt Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
Gen Kainerugaba has been a subject of interest this week after he announced his resignation from the UPDF via his twitter handle. His announcement prompted mixed reaction from the public with some calling it a stunt while others suggesting he was entering politics to succeed his father.
However, rumours started circulating social media indicating that the Commander in Chief of the armed forces President Museveni had halted his son’s early retirement. The rumours also suggested that Lt Gen Kainerugaba was yet to tender in his official resignation before the Commission and Promotions Board for approval.
Now, UPDF Spokesperson Gen Felix Kulaigye has confirmed that Lt Gen Kainerugaba is still part of the army and has not applied for retirement.

Only hours after his tweet, Lt Gen Kainerugaba posted a video on his twitter with veteran journalist Andrew Mwenda saying he would only retire by 2030.
It should be noted that for one to retire from the military, they must first officially tender in their written resignation to the Commissions and Promotions Board for approval. This is stipulated under the UPDF Act 2005
“An officer may in writing tender the resignation of his or her commission to the board but shall not, unless otherwise ordered by the Chief of Defence Forces, be relieved of the duties of his or her appointment until he or she has received notification, in writing, of the approval of his or her resignation by the board,” reads section 66 (1) of the Act.
