Assistant Inspector General of Police -AIGP Edward Ochom, Director of Operations is the latest police boss to retire from office after the President declined to renew his contract.

As of Monday, his Deputy John Nuwagira will act in the capacity of Director of Operations until a new appointments has been made.

AIGP Edward Ochom was appointed to Director Operations by the Inspector General of Police Martin Okoth Ochola on June 03 ,2020 replacing AIGP Asuman Mugenyi who retired. 

He has been in service for 35 years now since he joined the force in 1987. He was one of the first groups of Cadet Assistant ,Superintendent of Police after the National Resistance Army -NRA led by now President Yoweri Museveni captured power.

A graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Ochom was mentored by Sergeant Oundo at Kawempe police station before being promoted to head CID at the same Police Station.

Ochom has also served as Kampala regional CID officer, Western regional CID officer, and CID administrator. Ochom was later promoted to the rank of Assistant Commissioner.

Prior to his latest appointment ,Ochom served as the directorate of Research and Planning to fill the gap left behind by AIGP Asuman Mugyenyi who retired  after the expiry of his contract.

Ochom is remembered for being at the eye of the storm during the 2006 presidential election where Dr. Kizza Besigye who had just returned from self-imposed exile was being seen as a person who was going to upset the sitting government.

He follows in the footsteps of others including former Director Peace Support Mission AIGP Grace Turyagumanawe who retired in 2021, former Criminal Investigations Director AIGP Elizabeth Kuteesa who retired in 2018, former Interpol Director AIGP Fred Yiga who retired in 2019 and Commissioner of Police Nyeko who retired this year.
