Besigye escapes arrest

Police in Jinja are holding the driver to Former Forum for Democratic Change-FDC President Kiiza Besigye for speeding.

Besigye’s driver Fred Kato was arrested alongside three others on Saturday, for over-speeding and inciting violence by attempting to stage protests over high commodity prices in Jinja. The others include; Mukaku Lubega, Ketra Komugisha, Ronald Muhinda, all attached to the Red Card Movement.

The arrests came after Besigye managed to dodge police by jumping on a boda boda from Igar Café and Petrol Station in Jinja City where the group went to refuel their car.

Besigye managed to storm out of his vehicle, accessing Kyabazinga road, through the cafe. He jumped on a motorcycle that was later seen heading towards Iganga.

James Mubi, the Busoga East police spokesperson says the others refused to listen to police orders to stop return to Kampala but instead started driving at breakneck speed, an act that risked knocking dead people.

Mubi says Kato was late arrested for over-speeding after CCTV footage showed his car driving beyond the recommended limits.

The car was impounded at Nalufenya Police Post where it remaiins a Kato and other occupants are detained by police.

On Sunday, Besigye was seen campaigning vibrantly in Soroti City after defeating security. Besigye emerged at the FDC’s last rally in Kichinjaji ward.

Besigye is expected to campaign for Moses Attan Okia,  the FDC party candidate until Tuesday. 

President Yoweri Museveni will be in Soroti on Monday to campaign for Herbert Edmund Ariko, the NRM party candidate. 

The Soroti East polls are scheduled for July 28, 2022. Three candidates were nominated by the electoral commission to contest for the seat that fell vacant after the nullification of Attan’s election by the Court of Appeal.
