Nanyondo finishes sixth

Middle distance runner Winnie Nanyondo has finished six in the women’s 1,500m final at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.

The 28-year-old struggled to find her feet, spending most of the time in the inside lane where she failed to get space to enter the medal positions.

She posted a time of 4:05.68 while the race winner Laura Muir from Scotland posted 4:02.75 minutes.

Coming into the race, Nanyondo was among other favourites in the 12-women final after a great performance she exhibited while winning her heat, but she failed to live up to the expectations thus settling for the sixth position.

It was another disappointing result for Nanyondo who was hoping to make amends after failing to impress at the just concluded 2022 World Athletics Championships in the US where she only managed to finish 8th in the finals, but she failed to beat a strong 1,500m field.

In the same development, long distances runners Sarah Chelangat and Stella Chesang finished sixth and ninth respectively in the women’s 5,000-metre distance.

Chelangat posted a season-best time of 15:07.79, while her counterpart Chesang also posted a season-best time of 15:19.01.

On track, the Ugandan duo did not come close to the medal positions in the entire race that was dominated by Scotland’s Eilish McColgan and Kenya’s duo Beatrice Chebet and Selah Busienei. Chebet won the race in 14:38.21 followed by McColgan who crossed the finish line in 14:42.14 whist another Kenyan Busienei came third in 14:48.24.

Chesang, who had previously competed in the 10,000m looked composed and took the fourth position after the first three laps, but later dropped back as the Kenyan duo was battling Scotland’s McColgan in the medal bracket position.

Meanwhile, sprinter Harold Adoli also finished fifth in the men’s 400-metre race, behind Muzala Samukonga, who won the race. However, despite coming a distant fifth, Adoli will leave the games with a smile after posting a personal best time of 45.62.

Nanyondo Finishes Sixth

Meanwhile, as the Commonwealth Games enter the closing day, Uganda is counting five medals overall, three gold, and two bronze. This performance is, however, below the last edition’s games where Uganda finished with six medals, three gold medals, one silver, and two bronze medals.
