Police in Buikwe are holding a prison warder for shooting dead his ex-lover and a colleague at Bugungu Government Prison in Kanfunta, Nyenga Division, Njeru Municipal Council, Buikwe District.
The deceased identified as Eunice Abwot, a wardress at the same prison and Edward Namanya both died on spot under unclear circumstances. The incident happened on Monday morning.
The Uganda Prisons spokesperson, Frank Baine, says Jacob Otim, a warder at the same prison signed a gun to go for general duties but instead moved to the sentry where Abwot was working and shot her several times.
He says in the same vein, Otim shot Namanya as he tried to save Abwot. Otim later attempted suicide.
“After shooting the two, Otim tried to commit suicide but in vain. He was then subdued by other staff on duty and detained,” Baine says.
Baine says Otim and Abwot are parents of an eight month old baby but recently separated following misunderstandings between them.
