A driver of a Range Rover registration number UAS 066Q this morning narrowly escaped death after the vehicle suddenly caught fire along Kampala – Masaka highway.

The incident happened at about 8:40 am at Jandira, Kayabwe Town Council in Mpigi District after the driver identified as Emorut Joshua Egweu noticed a sudden smoke coming out of the car engine.

ASP Faridah Nampiima, the Traffics Directorate spokesperson says that Egweu, a resident of Mutungo, Nakawa division in Kampala, was headed towards Masaka but stopped along the road and exited the car to investigate the cause of the strange smoke.

Egweu was shocked to witness his car burning to ashes just seconds after he moved out of it.

Nampiima says that the car developed a mechanical fault and smoke began fuming from the engine. This prompted the driver to park off the road upon being alerted by other motorists.

She says efforts by the locals to put off the fire went futile and the car burnt to ashes.
