Doctors want President sacked

Doctors under the Uganda Medical Association (UMA) want the president, Dr Samuel Oledo thrown out of office over political remarks he made on behalf of the body.

Oledo and a group of his other colleagues on Saturday last week, went on their knees and endorsed President Museveni to run for another term in 2026 on grounds that he has significantly improved on the welfare of medical workers by boosting their salaries.

During a youth symposium at Kololo grounds, Oledo praised the President while stating that the least paid medic now walks home with 1.4 million up from the previous 600,000 shillings.

His statements irked a section of his colleagues and leaders within the medical body who went up in arms demanding his immediate resignation. They stated that Oledo errored when he expressed partisan politics on their behalf on matters they don’t stand for.

The members are now looking for a total of 425 signatures in an online poll aimed at censuring Oledo through an Extra Ordinary General Assembly.

By Tuesday show that 170 members had voted for the Extra Ordinary General Assembly. Of the doctors that participated, 192 are paid-up members with an up-to-date annual subscription for 2022.

According to article 15 of the association constitution, an extraordinary General Meeting can be called upon a requisition made in writing by a quarter of registered members. Currently, 401 members are registered and have paid their subscription fees for 2022. This means that more than a quarter has approved calling for the meeting.

However, Dr Herbert Luswata, the UMA Secretary General said the National Executive Committee (NEC) is looking into the matter and an appropriate communication will be made when the matter is resolved.

The National Executive Committee has 21 days to convene the event or else the petitioners are given a leeway to go ahead with the meeting as long as they comprise quarter of the members of the association.

Article 3 of their constitution requires them to be non-partisan and maintain a high standard of professional ethics.
