Eddy Kenzo will have to wait for another chance to bring home a Grammy Award after his first attempt flopped.
The most decorated artist in the region had his hopes of scooping the most prestigious award in music industry, thwarted by South Africa’s Wouter Kellerman, Zakes Bantwini and Nomcebo Zikode.
The trio beat competition from the likes of Arooj Aftab, Eddy Kenzo, Matt B, Burna Boy, among others to win the Best Global Music Performance award at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, USA.
The song on ‘Gimme Love’ on which Kenzo features Matt B (produced by A-Steyn) was nominated alongside Udhero Na by Arooj Aftab and Anoushka Shankar, Last Last by Burna Boy, Neva Bow Down by Rocky Dawuni featuring Blvk H3ro, and Bayethe Wouter Kellerman, Zakes Bantwini and Nomcebo Zikode.
Like a champion, Kenzo was quick to congratulate the winner as he took to his socials and wrote;
“And the baby went to South Africa. Thank you for the support my people . I’m forever grateful. Viva Uganda. This is just the beginning, mbagala nyo” reads Eddy Kenzo’s 1:12am tweet.
When he stepped on the podium after being announced winner, Zikode, well-known as the singer in the hit-song, Jerusalema, said: “Thank you so much to God. You know, I once gave the world a song that took the world by a storm… but I didn’t get this nomination or this award, but God was saying to me, ‘don’t worry, my daughter, I’ll give you Bayethe‘.”
