One student dies in school fire

A senior one student at Kyamate Secondary School in Ntungamo District at  Kyamate Secondary School has died and three others sustained injuries following a fire outbreak in two dormitories housing boys.

The fire gutted Nyerere and Mandela dormitories on Sunday at 9:30 pm while students had gone out for preps razing to ashes property like mattresses, bedding, beds, books, and other personal items.

The deceased is Bonus Ankwatireire, a resident of Isingiro district, he was reportedly locked inside the dormitory when the fire started.

According to the head teacher, Emmanuel Arinaitwe, attempts to save Ankwatireire were futile as he had already roasted dead by the time they arrived at the scene. He adds that three other students were injured while attempting to save their property.

“There were some in the fire.”

Samson Kasaira, the Rwizi region Police Spokesperson says that preliminary findings suggest that the fire could have been started by a group of former students raided sneaked in through the fence and torched the dormitory.

The lifeless body of the deceased was taken to Itojo hospital mortuary while the injured students are admitted at South Ankole Diocese Health Center.

In June last year, fire gutted a boys’ dormitory at Mbarara Secondary School, another at St. Andrews Secondary School in Rubindi, and the Administration block at Mbarara View High School. 

The fire incidents occurred within a space of 10 days from June 17 to June 27, 2022. Police have since failed to release a report explaining the cause of the fires.
