The 7.8 magnitude tremor struck on Monday at a depth of 17.9km (11 miles) near the city of Gaziantep, according to the US Geological Survey, which also noted that another tremor with a magnitude of 7.5 had its epicenter in the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaras province.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was forced to announce a three-month state of emergency that will end on May 14.
