Woman dies after drinking contaminated “bushera”
Police in Rubanda are investigating circumstances under which a 55 years old woman died after she allegedly took bushera that was contaminated.
The deceased has been identified as Vastina Twakire , a local from Rwondo village Shebeya parish Hamurwa sub county Rubanda district.
According to the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, Elly Maate, it is alleged that on March 25, 2023, the deceased converged with a group of about 30 women for a village Sacco meeting (kibina) where the local drink ‘Obushera’ was prepared and served to everyone at about 2:00 pm. After which they all dispersed to their homes.

Maate says that same night, the deceased fell sick and started vomiting and diahreating, she was eventually rushed to Hamurwa health centre IV in the morning but on the 27/02/2023, her condition worsened causing her transfer to Rugarama hospital in Kabale municipality, where she died on 28/03/2023.
Maate says police was notified of the circumstances surrounding her death by the area chairperson Hamurwa cell called James Mugabe. He says a team of officers visited the scene, and the
body was taken for postmortem at Kabale referral hospital mortuary.
He says the police surgeon took samples of internal body parts for further testing at GAL and statements taken from her and other patients who could have ingested the same drink. He says inquiries on going.
