SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to a classic Premier League rivalry, as Manchester City welcome Liverpool to the Etihad Stadium on the afternoon of Saturday 1 April 2023.

DStv and GOtv is the only true home of football in Africa, offering a range and depth of action that no other rival can match – it’s literally ‘Unbeatable Football’! If you’re going to spend your money on something, it may as well be on the best football in the world.

While the Citizens are fighting with Arsenal to claim the title, the Reds find themselves scrapping just to make the top four and secure UEFA Champions League football for next season.

“They [Arsenal] have gone many years without winning the Premier League and that has given them a little bit extra to win games, as they have after 93, 96, or 98 minutes. That desire is something they have that we don’t because we have won back-to-back titles,” admitted City manager Pep Guardiola, as they chase a fifth title in the space of six seasons.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, is hoping his team has put their inconsistency behind them: “Setbacks are setbacks but we are in the situation we are because of the setbacks, that’s how it is. And we are in the situation we are because of the good performances as well; we didn’t have only setbacks but we had too many, that’s clear,” said the German.

Key players

Phil Foden – Manchester City boast a wide array of attacking talent, but Foden provides an incisiveness and ingenuity that few others can match. The Englishman will look to put in a match-winning performance come Saturday afternoon.

Darwin Nunez – Though the Uruguayan’s finishing has not always been the most clinical, his energy and aggression in attack adds an extra dimension to Liverpool’s play. He will hope to harness his best form and strike at the heart of Man City this weekend.

Head-to-head stats

In head-to-head stats, Man City and Liverpool have met in 223 matches across all competitions since 1893. The Reds have claimed 108 wins compared to 59 for the Citizens, while 56 games have been drawn.

When the teams met in the Premier League earlier this season, at Anfield in October 2022, Liverpool claimed a 1-0 home win thanks to a 76th-minute strike from Egyptian star Mohamed Salah.

Battles to watch

Pep Guardiola v Jurgen Klopp – Guardiola and Klopp have a healthy respect for one another, having crossed swords many times in charge of their respective clubs. We can expect another fascinating tactical battle between these two outstanding managers.

Erling Haaland v Virgil van Dijk – This will be a classic ‘striker v centre-back’ battle, with Haaland determined to make his mark against Liverpool and get the better of one of the best defenders in the world.

Riyad Mahrez v Andy Robertson – The Algerian winger loves to cut inside from the right flank and use his left foot, which will provide a tough positional challenge for Liverpool left-back Robertson, who loves to get forward himself.
