Police nab five suspects for robbing schools, locals

Police in Wakiso have netted five suspects and are hunting for their ring leader Richard Mwesigwa for carrying out multiple robberies in the area.

The suspects believed to be part of a larger criminal gang terrorizing locals include; Kawooya Charles 17, Ssenkubuge Akiram 23, Mwesigwa Enock 32, Sagara Dennis 27,Mwanga Ivan 31 and Nekesa Racheal a wife to Mwesigwa.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy police spokesperson says the group was busted at their hide out in Gayaza Ward, Kasangati Town Council, Wakiso District. He says during the operation, police recovered several break in implements including eight sharpened pangas, six pit axes, five spanas, two motorcycles (UEF 094E Yamaha red in colour, UEK 221S Bajaj boxer red in colour), and a box containing nails.

“On March 7th, 2023, the police received information about a group of armed thugs in Gayaza Trading Centre, Gayaza Ward, Kasangati Town Council, Wakiso District. A team officers conducted surveillance in the area, and officers from Kasangati Police Station carried out an operation and arrested five suspects.”

He further states that investigations are ongoing, including a search of the suspects’ homes and efforts to trace those still at large.

This development comes amidst a spate of robberies in Wakiso district targeting schools. In a space of over one month four school security guards have been killed and several others injured, including property and money worth millions vandalized.

Among schools affected include; Kasawo Secondary School, Kyandondo Secondary School, Almadiinatul Munawarah Islamic School, Spring Field High School, and Cambridge College in Gayaza and Nswanjere Junior seminary school in Muduma subcounty Mpigi District.

The suspects target head teachers and bursars offices and ransack other rooms. Various items including various items including a TVs, mobile phones, cash worth over 195 million,laptops and school computers have been stolen.

Over 13 suspects were previously arrested in connection to the attacks.
