Police in Kasangati have caged a maid who deliberately dumped her newly born baby in a pit latrine.

The incident happened on On April 11th, 2023 when the suspect Namulemba Winnie, a shop attendant and resident of Kabaga Kayanga Kasangati town council was picked up by security operatives at a local clinic after her boss realized a baby crying in the latrine.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police spokesperson says Bulyaba Belinda, the boss to Namulemba first noticed blood stains in her employee’s room and tasked her to explain what had happened.

It is alleged that Namulemba remained silent, prompting Bulyaba to take her to a nearby clinic for a check up. While at the hospital, Namulemba confessed to accidentally loosing her fetus as she was using the pit latrine.

Owoyesigyire says that when Bulyaba rushed back home to clean the blood stained latrine, she heard sounds of a baby crying and immediately alerted neighbours who informed police of the matter.

He says the fire prevention and rescue services team swiftly responded in rescuing the victim. He also commends Bulyaba Belinda for promptly reporting the matter to the police.

He further explains that the baby was safely retrieved from the pit latrine and rushed to Hands of Love Medical Center for first aid treatment and later to Mulago Hospital for better management.

“The police have recorded statements from witnesses and have opened inquiries into the attempted murder of the baby against her mother Winnie Namulemba. We would like to assure the public that we take this matter very seriously, and justice will be served for the rescued baby. This incident highlights the need for parents and guardians to ensure the safety of their children at all times,” said Owoyesigyire.

The suspect is currently in police custody at Kiteezi Police Station on charges of attempted murder.
