The Save Rwizi Marathon, which is aimed at contributing to efforts toward fighting the continued degradation of the river, which has lost a significant percentage of its water catchment due to human encroachment and poor agricultural practices, is sponsored by Lato Milk in partnership with Abahumuza Development Group.

The first edition of the marathon was held in 2022 and it was successful. The proceeds went to cleaning and restoration of River Rwizi by planting trees along the river banks. The river also contributes to the water that moves into Lake Victoria.

However, locals that live near the river’s banks have engaged in activities that continue to degrade the catchment area, yet River Rwizi serves almost 26 districts.

The Abahumuza Development Group, the organization behind the marathon, say they are setting up garbage banks that are served by recycling bunkers in schools and communities. All you need is Shs20,000 to participate in the marathon. The fee includes a kit.
