The Uganda Business and Technical Examinations Board (UBTEB) has reported a significant 19% improvement in overall performance in the November/December 2023 examinations compared to the same period in 2022.

This announcement was made by UBTEB’s Executive Secretary, Onesmus Oyesigye, during the release of the November/December 2023 results.

Out of the 4344 candidates who took the examinations, an impressive 4059 candidates successfully demonstrated proficiency in their respective trades.

Breaking down the results by gender, 89.5% of the 832 female candidates acquired all competencies, while 94.4% of the 3512 male candidates achieved the same feat.

Oyesigye acknowledged the low enrollment of females in Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET) programs but commended the high performance of those who did participate, emphasizing that their competency levels were noteworthy.

Despite the positive trends, Oyesigye pointed out a decline in specific performance metrics. Distinctions decreased from 9.3% in 2022 to 3.0% in 2023, credit scores dropped from 52.6% to 47%, and pass grades decreased from 11.9% to 43%.

However, the overall pass rate remained high at 93%. Oyesigye attributed these changes to a shift in the emphasis of training and assessment, which now places greater importance on practical, hands-on, and skills-based evaluations.

In light of these findings, Oyesigye called upon parents and the general public to consider enrolling in TVET programs, highlighting the practical and skill-focused nature of the assessments as a key factor contributing to the improved overall performance.
