A busy midweek of action in Serie A opens with Atalanta welcoming Venezia to the Gewiss Stadium in Genoa on Tuesday evening, with La Dea looking to lift themselves up the log after a campaign in which they have not quite managed to click into top gear.

Atalanta boss Gian Piero Gasperini recently complained about the standard of refereeing in Italy, feeling that it has cost his team dearly in recent times: “Referees are really a problem, they never explain themselves, they never own up to errors. They are professionals too, so let them be professionals like us and come to speak to the media, because I have no idea what he thought he heard or saw. It’s about time they stop being protected.”

Tuesday also sees Juventus away to Salernitana, Fiorentina welcoming Sampdoria and Verona hoping Giovanni Simeone – the son of Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone – rekindles his scoring form for the visit of Cagliari.

Wednesday’s top games feature the Milanese clubs, with Internazionale hosting Spezia at the San Siro and AC Milan travelling to the Stadio Comunale Luigi Ferraris to take on Genoa. Inter boss Simone Inzaghi wants to see his team become more ruthless as the season nears the halfway point.

“We have to be good at turning the key moments in our favour, we have to do more while continuing to believe in the work that is being done. In the league we are on a good path, but there is still much work to be done,” said Inzaghi.

Roma and Napoli will be in action on Wednesday, taking on Bologna and Sassuolo respectively, before Thursday closes out the midweek round with Torino at home to Empoli and Lazio taking on Udinese at the Stadio Olimpico.

Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri has lavished praise on striker Ciro Immobile, who continues to be Le Aquile’s spearhead: “Usually, these kinds of players are selfish. Instead, [Immobile] is always available to the team. He has a beautiful personality, one of the souls of the team, on and off the pitch. An amazing guy.”
