Uganda’s Joshua Cheptegei produced an astonishing run in Monaco to break the 16-year-old 5,000m world record by almost two seconds. The 23-year-old, who won the 10,000m world title in Doha last year, had promised he would take a shot at the time but success seemed unlikely.

Upon breaking the unthinkable record last night, a number of notable political leaders including HE Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and Kyandondo East member of Parliament Hon Robert Kyagulanyi took to social member and sent out their colorful congratulatory messages thanking the new world record holder  for making Uganda proud again.

”Congratulations to Joshua Cheptegei who has set a new 5,000m world record at the Monaco Diamond League. You have brought honour, pride and joy to your country. Well done”

”What a man! What a record! Hearty congratulations to you, Joshua Cheptegei on setting a new world record. Uganda is proud of you. You have continuously proven to the world that no matter where you come from, if you work hard with resilience, there is nothing that you cannot achieve” Both Museveni and Bobi Wine posted respectively.

Probably out of fatigue or overwhelmed excitement on the night Cheptegei only managed to reply to Museveni’s message leaving out that of Bobi Wine warm congrats hanging in the air

”What a special and incredible night in monaco, thank you @MeetingHerculis for invite, I finally break 5000m World record 12:35:36.
