Tanzania’s vice-president, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has been sworn in as president of Tanzania.

She becomes the first female head of state in the East African country, after succeeding the deceased John Magufuli Pombe who succumbed to heart complications on Wednesday.

The Tanzanian constitution requires that the Vice-President takes over for the remaining term if the sitting president dies, resigns or is indisposed.

Described as a soft-spoken consensus-builder, Hassan will also be the country’s first president born in Zanzibar, the archipelago that forms part of the union of the Republic of Tanzania.

Hassan, 61, has been sworn in at State House in the country’s commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, on Friday.

In a statement, the presidency said Hassan would also hold a cabinet meeting immediately after being sworn in.

Samia Suluhu Hassan had served as vice-president under Magufuli from 2015 until his death.

In her speech after being sworn in,she described her predecessor as a patriot who had been committed to transforming Tanzania.

Hassan used her inaugural speech to urge for the “burying of differences” and repeatedly gave assurances of stability.

Hassan from Zanzibar is the 10th Vice President of the United Republic of Tanzania who first assumed Office on 5th November 2015, under President Dr. John Pombe Magufuli. Previously, she was a Minister of State, Vice Presidents Office in charge of Union Affairs.

In 2005-2010 she served as a Minister for Tourism, trade and Investment in Zanzibar and in 2000-2005 a Minister of Youth Employment, Women and Children Development in Zanzibar.
