Jacob Oulanyah defeated Rabecca Kadaga to become the Speaker of the 11th parliament.

Oulanyah who was taking on his former boss Rebecca Kadaga and FDC’s Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has won with 310 votes.

Oulanyah, the NRM’s only candidate was declared the winner by Chief Justice Alphonse Owiny-Dollo who is presiding over the function held at Kololo Independence Ground where the voting process was done.

Kadaga who came second has got a total vote of 197. There were two invalid votes.

This was after the Kamuli District woman MP Kadaga decided to contest Independently for the 11th parliament speakership race despite losing party candidacy.

Her party’s top organ, the Central Executive Committee (CEC) selected her former Deputy Speaker Oulanyah as its candidate for the seat.

The selection that saw Kadaga losing the majority vote was held at State House Entebbe on Sunday before announcing that she would run as Independent on the same day.

After Oulanyah was declared winner, rumour started swirling in Parliament corridors that male MPs would be forced to put on bow ties rather than the ordinary neck ties.

This is after claims that the man from Omoro believes “everyone has to be like him. “Jacob Oulanyah is now the Speaker, he might get someone to table a Bill or something, change the House rule so that a dress code is changed making bowties as the official tie,” One of the social media users posted.
