Kigezi North Diocese Bishop Dies

Church of Uganda is mourning the demise of the Rt. Rev. Benon Magezi, the Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese who has succumbed to covid19.

The deceased died at Mulago National Referral hospital on Tuesday night after battling the respiratory illness for days.

He was 1st admitted at Mbarara hospital for 2 weeks before being transferred to Kampala when his condition worsened.

In a press statement issued by the Church of Uganda Provincial Secretary Rev. Canon William Ongeng, burial arrangements will be announced in due time.

“The Most Rev. Dr Stephen Samuel Kaziimba, Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, regrets to announce the untimely death of the Rt. Rev. Benon Magezi, Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese. Bishop Magezi died on 15th June after a short illness. Burial arrangements are still pending,” reads part of the statement.

He was consecrated and enthroned as Bishop on 8th January 2017 at Emmanuel Cathedral, Kinyasano, Rukungiri.

He will be remembered for launching a major fundraising campaign to expand the Cathedral and the church’s ministry in the Diocese. He is survived by his wife, Gladys and their five children. 

Covid-19 has so far claimed a number of religious leaders across the country from all denominations.
