Rubongoya, the National Unity Platform secretary general has had to deal with questions about his past!

During the heated Presidential campaigns, David Lewis Rubongoya was ambushed by claims he is a mole working for the National Resistance Movement NRM within the NUP headed by musician turned politician Robert Kyagulanyi also famed as Bobi Wine.

Rubongoya has had to put up with the claims and kept in the company of Bobi Wine who spear headed the party’s first attempt at the presidency.

In an interview on NBS TV, Rubongoya narrated that the allegations come right from his former party NRM who have tried but in vain to convince back.

The NUP chief revealed: “It depends on who calls me a mole. Every political character will have distractions. Some of these things are sponsored by the regime itself. There have been attempts to buy me out of the opposition, and when that failed, they started propaganda.”

Rubongoya admitted: “When I supported the NRM, I was sincere in my support for them. I was not doing it out of compulsion. While at University, my dissertation was about military courts and the rule of law. I recommended that military courts should not be trying civilians. By then, I was still identifying as an NRM supporter.

On the idea of People Power, he explained: “People Power is the activist wing. It is an idea that inspires us. A political party is restrained, and it makes it necessary to have an activist wing.”

Rubongoya added: “We still belong to the People Power Movement. The idea of the movement was for Ugandans to come together and fight for a better country.”

On his role in NUP, he went on: “According to our Constitution, I head the Secretariat of the National Unity Platform, and I am the Accounting Officer of the party. I am answerable to the President of the Party.”

Rubongoya emphasized: “We have made it clear that we are non-violent, and I encourage non-violent approaches. Our strategy is not a violent one, and we condemn acts of violence whenever we see them.”

As a lawyer, he noted: “While I was a lecturer, I advocated for patriotism in a confined environment. Right now, I have a bigger platform. I can instil values of patriotism and good governance to even a wider community.”

Rubongoya slammed the legal system: “You might be a good lawyer, but the judges you will appear before are appointed by politicians. The quality of politicians you have matters.”

On why he chose the political path, he said: “I became an advocate for human rights and good governance. I realized that I could better influence policy by being directly involved in the politics of this country.”
