Museveni tells teachers not to compare teenage pregnancies to Covid-19

President Yoweri Museveni has warned teachers to stop comparing teenage pregnancies among school going girls to the the effects of Covid-19.

President Museveni raised alarm on Covid-19, calls for schools to open and teachers’ salary at the World Teachers’ Day commemoration at Kololo Independence Grounds.

Museveni raged: “I hear people talking of pregnancy. When there is pregnancy, there are two people now. Don’t compare death with losing time, jobs and money. That is reversible, but death is irreversible. How can you go on comparing this and you say your teachers?”

The President cited: “There are 600,000 people dead in Brazil because of Covid-19. For the US, they reached 600,000 deaths long ago, Only people died here. You think this is not important.”

On the calls for increase of teachers’ pay, Museveni said: “Mr. Baguma says when the science teachers are paid more, it will destabilize authority in schools. I am the President of Uganda, and I earn 3 million shillings. I hear that there are public servants who earn over 50 million shillings.”

He added: “The principle was all education for some. We said, let us have some education for all. We may not pay everybody well initially, but eventually we will.”

Museveni went on: “We would increase salaries for teachers, but then we don’t have enough money. They we said, why don’t we begin with some? The sciences teachers. Our plans have been well thought out. Stop resisting them.”

The President recollected his bush days when he said: “When we were fighting, we said guns were priority and clothes were optional. A naked person can shoot you, and you die. What was crucial was food. We could get medicine from the government whenever attacked.”

Museveni said: “The argument that the teachers of English should also be paid more because the sciences are taught in English are faulty.”

The President explained: “There is a good school in Soroti, Soroti Flying School, that was about to collapse because they were first paying HR. Can the HR fly the plane?”

He tipped: “I went to meet Ghadafi, and he was surprised when I told him I only needed guns, not money or clothes or media for propaganda. If you are dealing with problems, ask people who have dealt with problems. I am here.”

Museveni said: “I am also a teacher, but a licensed one. I taught S1 because there was a shortage of teachers. Don’t give lectures on teaching because I am one.”
