SC Villa 1-3 Wakiso Giants

SC Villa had a mixed day on Wednesday with the club confirming the massive news of the return of the prodigal son Omar Mandela as President.

The confirmation of Mandela as President lifted the spirit within the fan base but did not inspire the team in their fixture at Kavumba Recreation Centre against rejuvenated Wakiso Giants.

The City Tyres proprietor, a sworn SC Villa fan, went ahead to show his willingness to contest in the club’s upcoming elections during a news conference organised by the club in Kampala.

He said: “I have decided to stand as President for SC Villa. We are coming for nothing else but football.”

Mandela has come with his confidants Muhammad Bazirengedde, Ben Misagga, Salim Ssemanda and Daniel Bakaki. The Kampala businessman oversaw a successful era at Villa Park alongside Franco Mugabe.

His return will banish the rift with some elements within the club fan base who pelted stones at him during the club’s fixture against Iganga at Namboole in 2004.

Mandela will know he has returned at a time of scramble for the club’s leadership. FUFA President Moses Magogo has been named among elements who funded the club’s preseason training and transfers.

Opposition politician Medard Ssegona was leading the race for the club’s presidential elections while his rival Denis Mbidde promised so much.

SC Villa was finally granted permission to kickstart their season under the coaches Petros Koukouras, Jackson Magera and Richard Amatre. They started on a sound note with a marginal win against Police FC.

However, on a day Mandela was confirmed with his executive, the club fell to Wakiso Giants at Kavumba. The SC Villa legend will be told there is a lot of work to be done.

He can not do much now with the window already shut and the team under Petros largely inexperienced to mount a title push against the big boys of Vipers SC, KCCA FC and defending champions Express FC.

The Greek who inherited a team of new names continues to work to have them live to the expectations of the Uganda Premier League.

He apologised to the fans: “I want to send a big and sincere apology to our loyal fans for the result yesterday. Your passion and your love for the team is our motivation to continue working hard to improve things. We shall come back stronger.”

Travis Mutyaba is the beauty in SC Villa’s current set up but he will need more from his colleagues if they are to finish decently at the end of the season.

The other name on the club’s team sheet is 20-year-old midfielder Goffin Godfrey Oyirwoth who could have been counting two goals in his two fixtures thanks to poor finishing.

Mandela will surely dive into the transfer market in the half season break and knows what it takes to be at the top. However, the proper SC Villa team under his name will most probably happen after the current season.
