The pick of matches from the Premier League in this midweek is the Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool at Goodison Park, with all eyes set to be on Toffees manager Rafael Benitez as he comes up against his former team.

The Spaniard was in charge of the Reds from 2004 to 2010 and led them to a UEFA Champions League and FA Cup during his tenure. He now finds himself on the blue side of the Merseyside divide, but insists that he will be fully focused on the job at hand.

“One thing I want to be very clear is that I am trying to improve every single department. The fans, the club, the owners who have spent a lot of money, they are desperate to be competitive,” said Benitez.

“I said in one press conference that eighth [place] means nothing to me and I really mean that. I don’t want to stay here and try to survive. I want to be sure I can improve anything with my experience, my view and my staff.”

The midweek round will also see Manchester United welcome Arsenal to Old Trafford on Thursday night for a classic Premier League rivalry. Both clubs are looking to put themselves back in the upper echelons of the English game after some lean years, and this clash could prove an important yardstick for their progress.

“I’m extremely happy at Arsenal and privileged to be here. My focus is here,” Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said, having come through a tough start to the season.

In addition, Watford welcome Chelsea to Vicarage Road, while Manchester City will head to Birmingham for a clash against Aston Villa, and Tottenham Hotspur will have a London derby when they welcome Brentford.

Another intriguing clash sees Leeds United welcome Crystal Palace to Elland Road on Tuesday, with the tactical battle between Marcelo Bielsa and Patrick Vieira set to be one for football purists to enjoy. Ivorian star Wilfried Zaha is certainly enjoying life under the French coach.

“The difference you see is we keep the ball from the back. We actually keep the ball around the pitch,” said Zaha. “We have had a threat going forward. [But now] we make our chances. I feel like now we are exploiting the talent we have up front and all around the pitch.”
