Museveni speaks out on Al-Shabaab attack on UPDF base, says 54 soldiers were killed, two captured
For the first time in a week, President Yoweri Museveni who also doubles as the Commander-in_Chief of the armed Forces has spoken out on the attack on the UPDF base in Somalia.
Last week, the Al-Shabaab attacked the Army’s base in the war torn nation.
In a statement Saturday, the President said that “Our soldiers demonstrated remarkable resilience and reorganized themselves, resulting in the recapture of the base.”
“We discovered the lifeless bodies of fifty-four fallen soldiers, including a Commander. These terrorists attempted another ill-fated attack on Baraawe Town, but our forces dealt a significant blow, forcing them to flee,” the President said, adding that the mistake was made by two commanders, Maj. Oluka and Maj. Obbo, who ordered the soldiers to retreat.
“They have been apprehended and will face charges in the Court Martial,” he said.
According to the President, the UPDF managed to successfully recapture the Buulo Mareer Base from Al-Shabaab.
During that operation, he added that the UPDF discovered the lifeless bodies of 54 fallen soldiers, including Lt Col Edward Nyororo, the commander.
Two UPDF officers were arrested in relation to this attack, he revealed.
