Uganda’s battle-hardened troops serving under the African Union Support Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) have struck again, this time taking out one of Al-Shabaab’s most feared warlords.

Osman Hussein Bune Amiir, who was regarded as the militant group’s overall commander in Lower Shabelle, was gunned down on September 14th after UPDF soldiers laid a deadly ambush near Buulomareer.

Sector One Commander Brig Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga could not hide his pride, hailing the Buulo Mareer Forward Operating Base fighters for what he called “a decisive blow against Al-Shabaab.”

In the dramatic operation, the Ugandan soldiers also recovered a pistol loaded with three magazines, binoculars, mobile phones, and other military gear.

Maj David Ogweng, the Buulo Mareer commander, thanked his boss for the constant guidance and vowed his troops were “ready for any mission” to wipe out the extremists and restore peace in Somalia.

Brig Gen Ssemwanga later toured other Forward Operating Bases in Quoryoley and Goloweyn, where he checked on troop readiness and welfare, accompanied by senior commanders, including Lt Col Justus Magyembe.

With Amiir gone, security sources say Al-Shabaab has suffered a major setback in Lower Shabelle, a hotbed of insurgent activity.
