Government will not tolerate media and opposition politicians blowing their top over state of emergency to stop 2021 elections.

Opposition politicians have been calling for the state in the different media to declare a state of emergency and postpone the 2021 elections.

People Power Pressure group chief Robert Kyagulanyi popularly known as Bobi Wine appeared on CBS and NBS TV last week and dismissed Electoral Commission’s proposal to have scientific elections.

Bobi Wine brushed off during NBS TV interview: “There is no scientific elections. I am ready for an election as prescribed by the law.”

Dr. Kizza Besigye, opposition leader and former FDC presidential candidate branded the scientific elections a joke on social media.

Government has, however, warned opposition and the media that hosts them from ‘misinforming the public’.

During a news conference in Kampala, the minister of ICT and national guidance Judith Nabakooba stated: ” It is, however, unfortunate to hear that some politicians are calling for a state of emergency to be declared in the country.”

Nabakooba went on: “A number of media houses and politicians are misusing their airtime and space to misinform the public. I want to warn all media houses that this kind of programming will not be allowed. Political campaigns on all media houses have to be conducted in a manner which is acceptable.”

The minister charged: “There are some selfish individuals who have been calling for the postponement of the elections, the position of the government is that elections cannot be postponed, and will go ahead as scheduled.”

She emphasised: “It is unfortunate to hear that some politicians are calling for a state of emergency to be declared in the country. Uganda is a very peaceful and stable country and elections will be conducted peacefully under the existing covid-19 guidelines. Individuals calling for a state of emergency are doing so for their selfish interests.”
