Police recovers pistol used to rob locals

Police in Kampala have arrested eleven suspects and recovered a pistol used by a criminal gang in attacking and stealing from locals in Makindye Division.

The suspects were busted at their criminal hub in Katale zone and Nsambya paramount areas.

This followed a joint security operation carried out in Makindye Division in the areas of Kabalagala and Katwe on Friday last week.

Among those arrested include; 4 notorious suspects, Richard Atuhaire, Shukura Kabengana, Richard Tumwesigye and John Ahimbise, who were also found with a pistol, without ammunition that they were using to threaten victims.

Other suspects arrested include; Muto Nyanga, Latifu Amanyire, Moses Lubega, Clovis Musobozi, Emmanuel Bisulu, Bright Ankunda and Moses Katongole.

SCP Fred Enanga, the Uganda Police spokesperson told journalists on Monday that the operation on the criminals was carried out in areas of Katale zone, St. Benedicto, Nsambya Kevina among others.

Enanga said the thugs operate by targeting their victims between 7:00pm to midnight and at 5:00am in the morning.

He added that they usually target pedestrians and motorists, along Nsambya road, calendar to Hash Petrol Station section, areas of Katwe Kinyoro, Clock Towers and Entebbe Road.  

Enanga said an additional 80 suspects were arrested in the subsequent operations and charged for being in possession of dangerous weapons used against the public and for being a public nuisance (16 of these were rounded up from the city square and remanded). 

In another development, the police in Kampala have netted two suspects involved in ride-along attacks with stones and iron bars in Nabweru, Nansana Municipality.

The two suspects include; Jonathan Lujja, a resident of Kyebando, Kabulengwa and James Kato from Kawempe, Kutano. Another suspect identified as Mande of Naluvule is currently on the run.

They were arrested with a motorcycle registration number UFQ 445L Bajaj Boxer and several pavers.  

The police also recovered a motor cycle registration number UEZ 664G, that was abandoned in Nansana West II “A” ward, Nansana Municipality, after two notorious thugs identified as PATU a 25-year-old habitual thief of Kabulengwa and Mandwa, were seen snatching phones. 

They were rounded up by charged residents, who clobbered PATU to death while his colleague Mandwa escaped. The motor cycle is exhibited at Nansana Police Division as inquiries continue.
