Police in Kampala are investigating circumstances under which a vicious fire gutted Skys High School – Kibutika in Makindye Ssabagabo. The incident left two students unconscious.

The fire which broke out on February 27, 2023 at 2:00 pm spread across four dormitories and the school kitchen.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala metropolitan deputy police spokesperson told Galaxy Fm reporter Minah Nalule that preliminary investigations indicate that the fire started from the kitchen before extending to dormitories including those housing S1, S2, S3, and S4 students.

He explains that the two suffocated and have since been rushed to Namalere Health Centre IV for treatment.

Owoyesigyire identifies the affected students as Nasumbi Teddy (17) and Namuyinda Sheila (16), both in Senior four class.

“The Fire Prevention and Rescue services were introduced at the scene, and they were able to contain the fire. Thankfully, no fatalities were registered at the scene. We are currently conducting investigations to ascertain what exactly caused the fire,” he states further

This incident follows a fatal fire outbreak at Kyamate Secondary school in Ntungamo district, where a 13 year old student was killed in a fire that gutted two boy’s dormitories.

The fire broke out on Sunday night at 9:30 pm in a dormitory where Bonus Atukwatse was sleeping. Three others including Marvin Nuwenyesiga, Isaiah Ajjuna, and Lisbon Amanya were also injured in the same fire as they attempted to save their property.

Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, says that police have picked up four suspects and are hunting for the prime suspect, who was suspended from the school last week for alleged indiscipline.

It is alleged that the prime suspect connived with the four to burn down the dormitories using petrol in revenge for his suspension from school. He was suspended two weeks ago for bullying the deceased who consequently reported him to the school authorities.
