Musician Associations have dominated the entertainment industry in the last few days but despite their dominance, they seem to be politically and economically motivated.

In Uganda, we currently have two musician associations, (Uganda Music Association and Uganda Superstar Association) that are both fighting to get the attention of President Museveni’s young brother Gen Salim Saleh.

Because of this, some of the artists have chosen to distance themselves from the associations. Nina Roz is one of them. Nina Roz claims they are politically motivated and driven. “To waste my time focusing on the politics of music doesn’t help me in any way because I don’t get paid for it yet we are the voice for the voiceless. We are blessed that people (fans) listen to us and even pay us for it. At my age, it’s embarrassing for me to involve myself in the politics of music; it would even be more embarrassing for the young people who look up to me and have a dream of singing,” Nina said in an interview with Spark TV.

The young musicians have distanced themselves from the associations because of the politics around them since they are most likely to kill their careers.

It is the relatively older musicians that are taking centre stage in these associations.
