Police in Kampala Metropolitan Area have busted two prime suspects and recovered 16 stolen vehicles in a crackdown.

According to the Police Spokesperson SCP Fred Enanga, the joint security crackdown involved officers at the Directorate of Crime, Crime Intelligence and Police in two districts of Mukono and Mbale.

Enanga said the intelligence-led operation led to the arrest of two prime suspects believed to be part of a bigger racket involved in the theft of cars at parking areas, places of worship, bars and clubs.

He explained that the operation followed a robbery incident in Mukono, where a local business man identified as Nsubuga Mukwaya Hassan reported a missing car registration number UAP 778G.

He said the joint security task team started its operations on 5th July 2022, from Nkonge in Mukono. A suspected stolen motor vehicle was recovered from Wobulenzi with a forged number plate UAM933G, after the original number plate was removed.

Enanga said the operation led them to the residence of one Musisi Alex alias Mark Butyampa of Bulijjo village, Kiyunga Parish, Kyampisi sub-county in Mukono district.

Butyampa was reportedly working with one Kisule Juma alias Jajja Mbale alias Muwada Juma to clone number plates of stolen vehicles.

He said the operation was later expanded to Mbale with the help of the two suspects and led to the recovery of 16 motor vehicles suspected stolen from different parts of the country.

“They change the original plates with cloned number plates (a process they call baptising) and sell them to Kisule Juma alias Jajja Mbale alias Muwada Juma alias Walusimbi Juma alias Wambedde.

The group reportedly forms part of a wider racket behind motor vehicle thefts in Kampala, Mukono, Luwero and other parts of the country.

He called upon persons whose motor vehicles in the category below were stolen, to come and view them.
