SuperSport viewers on DStv and GOtv can look forward to a classic Premier League rivalry, as Manchester United welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford on the evening of Monday 22 August 2022.

The Red Devils are well behind the development of Jurgen Klopp’s team but will be hoping that home advantage and nous of new manager Erik ten Hag can force an upset.

“It is a hell of a job [being in charge of Man United],” said ten Hag. “We have to work really hard, analyse then move forward. We need to have self belief, as well as the tactical organisation, and a hunger to always improve.”

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, meanwhile, will hope his team can continue their recent dominance over United – though he believes Old Trafford is always a tough place to travel to… despite a 5-0 win there last season.

“Always we expect a difficult game and it will be no different,” said the German tactician. “We don’t care about what the results in the past or even last season were… only what happens this time is what counts now.”

Key players

Christian Eriksen – The Danish playmaker is still finding his feet at Manchester United, but is sure to add a variety of passing and vision that should benefit their attacking players. If Eriksen can get time and space on the ball, then the Red Devils will have a good chance of unlocking Liverpool’s defence.

Mohamed Salah – After signing a bumper new deal in the off-season, Salah is now back to his settled best with Liverpool and will be eager to get a run at a Man United defence which is still quite fragile. Should the Egyptian prosper, the Reds will surely head home with three points.

Head-to-head stats

In head-to-head stats, Man United and Liverpool have met in 237 matches across all competitions since 1894, with the Red Devils claiming 89 wins compared to 80 for the team from Merseyside, while 68 games have been drawn.

Liverpool claimed an emphatic Premier League ‘double’ over United last season, winning 5-0 at Old Trafford in October 2021 and 4-0 at Anfield in April 2022. Mohamed Salah scored five of the Reds’ nine goals across the two games.

Battles to watch

Erik ten Hag v Jurgen Klopp – The Dutch tactician is a newcomer to Premier League football and will have his tactical wits tested to the extreme by the intensity of Klopp’s approach.

Jadon Sancho v Andy Robertson – Sancho will hope to weave some magic down the right flank for the hosts, but has a potent and stubborn direct opponent in Liverpool left-back Robertson.

Darwin Nunez v Harry Maguire – Nunez is already a cult hero amongst Liverpool fans and if he can dominate against Maguire and lead the visiting team to an Old Trafford win, his stock will rise even higher.
