The MTN Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Masaza Tournament, a two-part sporting event, showcased the remarkable talent and unity among the people of Bunyoro in Kagadi District this Independence Weekend. Organized by the Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom in collaboration with MTN Uganda, this initiative aims to nurture the youth’s potential and strengthen community bonds.
Enganda Bicycle Tournament: A Resounding Success
The Enganda Bicycle Tournament, held at the Muhooro BCS Primary School playground in Muhooro Town Council, Kagadi District, witnessed an enthusiastic turnout of both participants and supporters. Over 50 cyclists pedaled their way to glory, motivated by the prospect of winning exciting prizes and securing a spot in the grand finals scheduled for October in Hoima City.
In the men’s bicycle race, the top five performers who earned themselves a spot in the grand finals were:
- Twine Brian
- Byamukama Amos
- Tumugumisirize Banabas
- Kamara Herbert
- Byakagaba Elevis
Meanwhile, the women’s bicycle race produced equally impressive results, with the following cyclists emerging victorious:
- Nyangoma Oliver
- Kirabo Allen
- Angayo Hellen
- Nakitende Leticia
- Ajok Monic
Mr. Godfrey Ssebugwaho, the County Chief of Buyaga West, expressed his admiration for the participants, particularly the women, who exhibited remarkable determination and competitive spirit. He highlighted the government’s commitment to encouraging women’s participation in various activities, praising the tournament as a step toward achieving this goal.
Ssebugwaho also urged the winners to invest their prize money wisely, emphasizing the importance of generating income to combat poverty in their homes.
The bicycle tournament not only promoted individual talents but also fostered unity, camaraderie, and a better understanding of the Kingdom’s clans, some of which had never been documented.
Abacwamba Clan Triumphs in Bunyoro Inter-Clans Football Tournament
In the parallel sports event, the Bunyoro Inter-Clans Football Tournament, the Abacwamba clan showcased their football prowess as they progressed to the next level. The tournament, held at Muhooro Town Council in Kagadi District, saw spirited participation from various clans, with matches proceeding smoothly despite an early morning downpour.
The Abacwamba clan secured their place in the tournament’s next stage with an impressive 2-0 victory over Abacubo. In another match, Abadworo dominated Bakurungu with a convincing 3-0 win.
Fred Rukahemura, the Kingdom’s Minister in charge of Culture and Clan Mobilization, commended the peaceful atmosphere of the tournament and the overwhelming support from the community. He announced that Abacwamba would compete against other progressing clans in Hoima City this October.
Ibrahim Mugisa, the captain of the Abacwamba clan, expressed his gratitude for the partnership between Bunyoro Kingdom and MTN Uganda, which had made it possible for them to participate in the tournament. Mugisa lauded MTN for covering all expenses, enabling the clan to focus on developing their football talents.
As the MTN Bunyoro Kitara Kingdom Sports Extravaganza continues to unfold, it serves as a testament to the power of sports in uniting communities, nurturing young talent, and fostering pride in cultural heritage. The Bunyoro people through these sporting events, are celebrating both their history and their bright future.
