Uganda National Examinations Board-UNEB has withheld 1,262  Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examination results of candidates over suspected malpractice.

A total of 1,262 cases that were detected have been withheld in accordance with section 4,(3) of the UNEB Act of 1983.

Prof Okwakol, the UNEB Chairman attributed this to teachers providing assistance to the students during practicals and students copying from one another particularly in the science subjects

She said on Friday morning that the affected students have been informed of their results through their headteachers and will be given a just hearing.

She noted that all students have been invited together with the their headteachers , school committee heads and local politicians.

”We are doing this because some of these cases have been interpreted by some as being politically motivated” she added.

Prof Okwakol, however, says “the 2019 UCE examination was conducted smoothly and free from leakage”

“There are reduced malpractice cases from 1825 in 2018 to 1262 cases.”

According to Okwakol, Uneb has continued to resist and fight malpractice in schools with measures put in place by the board that also contributed to the 2019 UCE results being free from leakage.

UNEB is the view that there is a need to investigate and identify the factors responsible for this phenomenon with a view to addressing the negative development.

A total of 337,697 candidates registered to sit for the 2019 Uganda Certificate of Examinations (UCE) from 3,531 centers across the country.
