Errant soldier

Police in Katwe are holding an errant UPDF soldier who attempted to shoot at a traffic police officer on duty.

Kampala Metropolitan deputy police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire says the soldier is detained in Katwe, awaiting his appearance in court.

He says a case file under  KAT SD REF 68/23/07/2022  has been opened and investigations have commenced into circumstances that led to the stand off. 

A viral video trending on various social media platforms over the weekend was filmed at Kibuye roundabout.

It is alleged that the suspect identified as Herbert Kakama RA 080643 WO1 attached to Chief of Training and Recruitment, Mbuya blocked the roundabout with his car registration number UBK 210V on Saturday.

The car that was abruptly parked in the middle of the road, opposite Shell petrol station halting the movement of  big trucks and other cars,hence bringing traffic to a standstill.

Kakama’s impulsive actions prompted concern from traffic officers who asked him to remove his car that was wrongly placed inorder to restore traffic. However, a defiant Kakama pulled out a gun and tried to shoot at them, prompting the traffic police officer and his colleague to retaliate.

Errant soldier

Kakama was wrestled by the duo to the ground and later disarmed. He was consequently arrested at Katwe Police station where he is currently detained.

This is not the first time that traffic officers are being confronted by armed soldiers under similar circumstances.

Recently in May,2022, two UPDF soldiers attacked a traffic police officer at Kyaggwe road, ordering him to halt traffic to allow their swift movement,the officer declined and a scuffle ensued between the officers forcing a gun fight. 

In January, 2022, Robert Mukebezi, a traffic police officer was shot in the leg after he tried to tow a vehicle belonging to the UPDF that was involved in an accident to Kira Road Police Station.
